Friends
of St. Michael's
St Michael and
All Angels is a magnificent building. Standing at the heart of the
community, it serves not only as a place of worship and prayer, but
also as a venue for many other public events. Without question, this
exceptional parish church is an essential part of Houghton’s
heritage and identity, providing a familiar and reassuring landmark
for residents as well for the many hundreds of travellers and visitors
who pass through this town each year.
The current church
reflects a number of building phases and architectural styles covering
over 800 years. Characteristic features of each are preserved which,
together with significant tombs and memorial plaques, reinforce the
historic importance of St Michael’s and justify its Grade I
Listing (reserved for only the finest buildings).
The day-to-day
running costs of sustaining the pattern of worship and ministry based
in St Michael’s is rightfully the responsibility of church members.
However, the long-term maintenance and upkeep of the building itself
is a major undertaking that requires the support of the broader community
as well as of other interested parties.
To this end, the
FRIENDS of Houghton Parish Church was established in 1993. It is a
registered charity with well over one hundred members.
The FRIENDS of
Houghton Parish Church work in association with the Parochial Church
Council to fund repairs and improvements to the building and fabric
of St Michael’s.
FRIENDS receive
a badge on joining and, each year, an annual report, Christmas Card
and concessions for concerts and other events. For many, it is a way
of keeping in touch and supporting the church even though attending
may not always be possible.
