Free Gilpin 500 School Resource Pack

Bernard Gilpin was passionately committed to education – he founded the first grammar school in Houghton-le-Spring and paid for boys to attend Oxford University. We are equally passionate about education!

We have produced a resource pack for any schools wanting to take part in the Gilpin 500 commemorations. Not only is there scope for enlivening your history curriculum but also for looking at themes in RE, citizenship and SMSC.

Download the pack here.

If you would like someone from the church to come and deliver assemblies or lessons on Bernard Gilpin, please contact Curate Rev’d Bryony Taylor.

If you are looking for supplementary materials for your lessons such as DVDs, topic boxes, books etc. please contact the North East Religious Resources Centre: https://www.resourcescentreonline.co.uk/

Gilpin 500 is launched!

2017 is finally here and along with it our year of commemorating and being inspired by our former Rector Bernard Gilpin. We launched our celebrations this morning at St Michael’s with a special cake and a prayer for Gilpin 500. Join us for our events – download the calendar here and pray for God’s blessing on us and our town of Houghton-le-Spring using the words of our Gilpin 500 prayer:

God of love and compassion,

we give you thanks for the

life and witness of Bernard Gilpin.

May we be inspired to follow his example

of faith, generosity and service to

transform our community today;

in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
