The
Next 900 Campaign Appeal
What is the Next Nine Hundred
Years Campaign all about?
We are aiming to keep St Michael &
All Angels Church at the heart of Houghton le Spring’s community
for another nine hundred years.

St Michael’s is the oldest building
in Houghton. At its heart are the striking remains of the earliest
church that stood on this site – a carved stone above a tiny
doorway, featuring mysterious intertwined beasts. It dates from Norman
times, nearly a thousand years ago. (Click
here to find out more.)

But St Michael’s is not only significant
for its great age or for the fact that people have been worshipping
here for over nine hundred years. It is also a living and thriving
resource for the people of Houghton le Spring – a place for
worship, education and community activity.
All these years and all this activity
have taken their toll on our lovely building. Some of the very fabric
of the church is failing. We also need new facilities to bring the
building properly into the 21st century.

This is why we need your help. We want
St Michael’s Church to last another next nine hundred years.
To do this, we need to raise one million pounds through our Next Nine
Hundred Years campaign. (next)
