The
Next 900 Campaign Appeal
What have we achieved so far?
Over the past ten years the church community
– a vibrant gathering of around 250 people – has helped
to carry out many improvements at St Michael’s.
Together we have already installed new
central heating, created new office space in the upper vestry, added
a disabled toilet and a new servery in the west end of the church
and, most recently, restored the chancel windows.
We could not have done this without the
sterling work of our congregation, supporters and Friends, who also
help to fund the day to day ministry and maintenance. This alone costs
over £100,000 a year. (click here

English Heritage, the Historic Preservation
Trust, Northumbria Historic Preservation Trust and a number of charitable
trusts have all helped with repairs in the past by, for which we are
very grateful.
Now we are starting to fundraise all
over again, so we can afford to do all the new repairs and add more
facilities to make the building and its stories accessible to everyone.
That’s what the Next Nine Hundred Years campaign is all about.
How much money have we raised
already?
We’ve been promised £300,000
by the Heritage Lottery Fund, City of Sunderland, Biffa and English
Heritage, amongst many others – but we’ve still got a
long way to go to reach the million pounds we need.
We’ve already done a lot of preparation
work with experts to draw up detailed plans, so you can be sure we’ll
be investing all the money we raise wisely in the building and its
new facilities. (next)
